Other, Amsterdam, Female, 24 and under

My experience of design education has been majorly female—and similarly has my industry experience, working at a social design studio of about 80% women. In general I have experienced a strong female basis in design but I completely see that this isn’t usually the norm and the industry is often more male dominated. I often wonder whether it’s a mix of the legitimate discrimination women face constantly, but also just the lack of confidence. Many men I know will go for jobs they are very under qualified for or just send an email, ask for an opportunity with no fear. The women I know in the design industry are very very modest about their talents and are a lot less confident in them. This is not women’s fault, it is part of the massive bigger issue of women never being installed with the same confidence as men. This comes from so many different angles I think it’s bigger than the design industry, design is just one place you can see the effects of it.
