South Africa, Gauteng, Female, 24 and under

As a female studying Industrial Design, I often felt incompetent in the workshop where tools were being used to build products. I have never experienced gender discrimination by classmates or lecturers, in fact they were very encouraging and constantly made me feel like I can do anything. However, I feel like I was the one who undermined my own abilities, simply because I watched as my male classmates used these tools with such confidence and bravado. The male students seem to handle the machines easily, while I was scared that I have not used these tools and machinery before. However, I am grateful for the lecturers, workshop manager, and classmates who helped me build my confidence in using workshop tools and machines.
