South Africa, Gauteng, Female, 25-34

Within Industrial design, industry is male-dominated. I am the only female in my department at work. During my studies male and female students were equal amounts. Our class was the first for this to happen. In the past, female students were very few. This is probably due to design becoming more digital, and less workshop-orientated. However, many of my female friends and other women that I know of in other design fields end up not having the desire to enter industry, but rather to teach in some form. The reason being that industry is too all-consuming and wanting more flexible hours. Being in industry for just over a year, I have not had any negative experiences within the workplace because of my gender. Contrary, I suspect it could have helped me in some cases.
