South Africa, Gauteng, Male, 25-34

I could not begin to say why there is gender imbalance in design disciplines. As an art student, it was much of the same, almost 65% female to male, with only one of the 5 top students being male. From my understanding, most female students went into a teaching/academic position.

This ratio never bothered me, I was not a top student. Moreover, I came from a family where I was the only male, so it all seemed fine to me.

There does seem to be a shift taking place, perhaps it has not fully manifested in the industry but the word/ideas around these notions seems to be spreading.

I feel as though over-correction will take place and the creative industry will force its hands. In this way, I fear that talent might be overshadowed by political agendas. I do think it’s still necessary, and with time I believe it will balance out.
