UK, Female, 24 and under

I’m not sure of the stats, but while I was studying Graphic Design I felt that there was good gender diversity amongst staff and students. What I did notice is that by the time we had entered university, I felt that many of the male students were far more able to assert themselves with their more explorative projects, which worked in their favour.

When it came to applying for design jobs in my local area, I didn’t feel comfortable reaching out to the small all-male companies I came across. I was intimidated at the thought of being a female junior in that environment.

In my first role I was in a business of 5 people. 4 women, and one man at the top of the company. Overall it was a very supportive environment, where I felt able to express struggles with anything from mental health to period pains. This said, I found that teamwork was strongest amongst my female colleagues, and that I could depend on these individuals more.

I’ll be interested to see how future teams compare. I have heard many horror stories but I hope that I can be part of positive change.
