UK, Greater London, Female, 25-34

After interning at a few design agencies around the UK, I decided that they weren’t for me and to avoid them when looking for work because they felt so intense and male-dominated. I wonder if the lack of work/life balance (which many of my friends in agencies have spoken of), is because of the male-led culture—often coming from the founders. It seems that to excel in these environments, you must make design ‘your life’, which often isn’t an option for women, particularly those with children.

I’ve always worked in-house for the charity sector and in my experience, male colleagues dominate conversations and meetings in this environment too. It can be exhausting having to fight for the space to speak or have your ideas heard on a daily basis.
